A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS...
What is a 'specialty' stationery brand?
"Specialty" means the product is of a high-end, boutique quality, similar to what you would find among other boutique brands such as The Paper Source, Papyrus and Rifle Paper Co.
Where does the name come from?
I draw a lot of my inspiration from my family background -- my dad’s family has roots in Alabama and Mississippi, while my mom and her family emigrated from Jamaica. Growing up, I was definitely taught the Southern way of politeness and charm, while also enjoying the color and spice of Island food and culture. Charm & Spice, then, is basically two sides of the same woman -- charming and sweet, but a bit fiery and feisty too.
How did you get started?
Back in 2011, I was frustrated (and honestly, a bit annoyed) with the lack of chic, modern stationery and greeting cards featuring women who looked like myself and my circle of girlfriends. We're all embodiments of the modern young woman -- urbane, stylish, well-traveled and very much into having some wine and a ton of fun -- all while living in brown skin.
We saw no reflections of that -- literally, NONE! -- in the greetings card and stationery stores where we shopped.
So I created them myself. For Christmas 2011, I created my first collection of holiday cards featuring glamorous illustrations of multicultural women. The cards drew an overwhelming response, eventually being picked up by a major national retailer and being covered by Upscale Magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer and ABC 6 News in Philly.
Ever since then, the one question I get the most is, “Where can I buy your cards?” Now they're available here, exclusively online. Start shopping here.
